چکیده

LINGUISTICS 407 Lecture #5 TYPOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION Typology is concerned with • establishing what types of systems are possible in natural language, • investigation of structural similarities among languages that are not genetically related. Languages may be classified on the basis of their type. In 1818 A. Schlegel proposed a typological classification of languages -still very influential! Languages may be analytic (isolated or root -no inflection!): e.g. Vietnamese, Chinese synthetic (inflectional) : e.g. Latin, Russian agglutinative: e.g. Turkish, Finnish (transitional type) Study the examples on p. 97. Sapir: introduced the term polysynthetic (e.g. Amerindian languages) Linguists today involved in comparative reconstruction take a keen interest in typological studies . typological plausibility ↓ a reconstruction should be plausible from a typological point of view

Typological traits and genetic linguistics

One of the basic principles in establishing a genetic grouping of languages is that typological traits must be excluded from consideration at the initial stage of establishment; only substantive traits (form-meaning pairings) are relevant. Yet typological evidence is still frequently appealed to in recent discussions of the methodology for establishing genetic classifications and in recent prop...

Revising Talmy’s typological classification of complex event constructions

Talmy’s typological classification of motion events, later generalized to manner vs. result event encoding, has been highly influential in linguistics and psychology. Recently, crosslinguistic comparison has indicated that it is in need of revision, in particular to account for symmetric eventencoding constructions such as serial verbs. We extend Talmy’s classification to include various symmet...

Worldlikeness: A Web-based Tool for Typological Psycholinguistic Research

In this paper, we introduce Worldlikeness, a web-based tool for collecting and sharing cross-linguistic wordlikeness judgments (nonce word acceptability judgments) to facilitate typological psycholinguistic research. Typological psycholinguistic research is essential since crucial factors affecting language processing vary across languages, but these factors often too confounded to tease apart ...

Contact-induced typological change

1. Introduction. It is easy to show that contact-induced change can have a profound effect on the typological profile of the receiving language. Probably the most obvious examples , and also the ones that are easiest to find, are changes in basic sentential word order. These are especially striking because it is word order features that have attracted the most attention in the typological liter...
